E.J. Churchill XXV “Regal” 12-Bore Boxlock Ejector | Edwin Smith Easy-Opening Patent | 25" Barrels | Churchill Rib

This E.J. Churchill XXV 12 bore, originally sold as a Utility model and later rebranded as a Regal, features the Edwin Smith easy-opening system (British Patent No. 372035 of 1931), 25" barrels, and Churchill’s signature raised, narrow rib—designed for fast handling in dense cover.

Introduced in the 1920s by Robert Churchill, the XXV was a bold departure from traditional British design, favoring shorter barrels, reduced weight, and quicker handling without sacrificing ballistic performance. If you’d like to learn more about the firm and the origins of the XXV, search YouTube for “The History of E.J. Churchill: The XXV, Short Barrels, and British Gunmaking Innovation.”

This example incorporates the Smith patent easy-opening system, in which additional internal springs housed in the action bar assist both in cocking the locks and reducing the effort required to open the action when the top lever is actuated.

Originally marked Utility, this gun was later re-engraved Regal by the firm, as Churchill frequently offered in the post-war years to move away from the negative connotations associated with the word “Utility.” Under wartime rationing, the term came to describe goods that were inexpensive and of average quality—something Churchill was eager to distinguish his guns from.

Mechanically, the gun is tight and on face, with ejectors in time, smooth, precise operation throughout, and 25" barrels that carry an 850 bar nitro reproof. Bores are clean and bright, and the barrels ring with a clear tone.

A fast-handling, field-ready Churchill XXV—ready for the grouse woods this fall.
